Gastrotrich egg. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Chaetonotus sp. gastrotrich egg. Gastrotrichs are microscopic, worm-like animals found in both freshwater and marine habitats. Chartonotus is the largest of the freshwater gastrotrichs. Gastrotrichs can produce two types of eggs; one that develops and hatches in a few days, or one that is able to remain dormant for long periods and survive dry and cold conditions. Magnification: x1600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
