Intestinal microvilli, transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The microvilli are finger-like projections (seen here in circular cross-section) that line the surface of cells on the villi in the small intestine. The microvilli increase the surface area available for the absorption of nutrients from digested food. They have a double membrane structure around a core of actin and other filamentous proteins. Magnification: x22,500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
