Southern Ethiopia-Hamer Tribe-Omo Valley
The photos reflect the various Hamer tribal groups located in the Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia. During an engagement ceremony the women relatives connected to the prospective bride invite professional whippers to whip them. This reflects their devotion to their family and relatives. The groom is required to prove himself by leaping over a number of bulls several times. Dancing and face painting are also seen as part of the ceremony.
