Looking across Porthmeor beach, St. Ives, Cornwall on a summer afternoon towards 'the island' and Godrevy lighthouse.

Porthmeor beach is on the North coast of the town of St. Ives in Cornwall. It offers the best surfing conditions for the town and is also very popular for families and holidaymakers. At the east end of the beach is 'the island' which is actually a small peninsula of grass and granite rising up to St. Nicholas' chapel on the top from where can be seen spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean on three sides and a view back into the town to the south. Godrevy lighthouse in the distance was built in 1858-9. It is a white, octagonal tower, 86ft high and is made of rubble stone and mortar. It is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf to write 'To the Lighthouse' although she set the book in the Hebridees. She visited the lighthouse on 12th. September 1892 and signed the visitor's book together with the painter William Holman Hunt.
