The diagnosis is made from the clinical picture and is confirmed bythe laboratory findings. The causative treponemata pallida can frequentlybe demonstrated in the superficial lesions, while examination of theplacenta may reveal the characteristic changes. Moreover, X-ray ex-amination of the long bones may show the characteristic osseous changes.
