Part of this cornice, found in thehouse of which we speak, is well deserving our notice, becauseit contains, within itself, specimens of three different epochsof art, at which we must suppose the house was first built,and subseq^uently repaired. It is made of a fine clay, with a. Part of the cornice of the Impluvium of the Atrium of the House of Sallust. lions head moulded upon it, well designed, and carefullyfinished. It is plain, therefore, that it was noi meant to bestuccoed, or the labour bestowed in its execution would havebeen in great part wasted. At a later period it has beencoated over with the finest stucco, and additional enrichmentsand mouldings have been introduced, yet without injury tothe design or inferiority in the workmanship; indicatingthat at the time of its execution the original simplicity of arthad given way to a more enriched and elaborate style ofornament, yet without any perceptible decay, either in thetaste of the designer or the ^ill of the workman.
