American bittersweet clam shell. The shell of an American bittersweet clam (Glycymeris americana), a species of marine clam found along the Atlantic coast of North America. In warmer waters, the shell (valves) may reach 12 centimetres in diameter, but in cool waters it is much smaller. Shells of bivalve molluscs such as clams consist of two articulating parts, or valves.
