Now-a- days their home is everywhere; but tlie counties of Durham, York, 'Westmore- land, and Northumberland claim the proud distinction of having produced them as a breetl, and for a long time they bore the name of ' Durham cattle.' By the climatic and geological influences, whatever they may be, of the district covered by those counties they were originally moulded ; yet, more than most of our other breeds, they are sup]iosed to be indebted to long bygone crosses with foreign cattle.
