Cataract surgery. Image 1 of 6. Patient having a local anaesthetic injected into their lower eyelid prior to undergoing cataract surgery. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. The surgeon will remove the abnormal lens and replace it with a prosthetic one. For a series showing the surgical procedure, see images M570/186 - M570/191.
