Chalcidians in early history is not knownI to us ; it was taken by Hip-pocrates of Gela, about 495,was depopulated by Hieronin 476, and was restored about461. It fell under the enmityof Syiacuse, in consequenceof its having espoused thecause of Athens in 415; andin 403 it was utterly destroyed by Dionysius, and its inhabitantsexpatriated. The Siculi, to whom the territory was then given, erected. Coin of Xaxos. The earliest notice of this occurs in Homer, who describes it as opposite toScylla, though it is really some ten miles distant. Scylla offers no particularrisks to the navigator : Charvhdis, on the other hand, might \rell be dreaded bythe ancients, vhose vessels were small and undecked ; even at the present daylarger vessels are sometimes endangered by it. It is formed by the meeting ofopposite currents, which are much affected by certain winds.
