Of these the art ofphotography has its instance, one patentdescribes the background,shown in Fig. i, by meansof which the effects pro-duced by the shaded back-ground, which has latelycreated such a stir, as wellas other effects, can be pro-duced. A shaft, carrying alarge disc, is pivoted in astandard which is sup-ported on a base mountedon casters. This disc iscovered with the ordinarybackground material ofan even tint all over. Toproduce a lighter shade onthe dark side of the face, a. Fig. card of lighter tint is fastened to the discin the center of the part where the lighter effect is desired. A weightis then placed in a pocket on the lower edge of the disc, and if thedisc is set to oscillating during the exposure of the plate, the motionwill blend the light and dark shades evenly together. By fastening a cardof the proper size anddepth of color to thedisc and giving it arotary motion, the ef-fect of the whole sur-face may be madelighter or darker asdesired. The rotarymotion is produced bywinding a weightedcord on the shaft. Another patentshows a screen, whichis intended to con-ceal the operator fromtimid children, whobecome frightened athaving the camerapointed at them. The
