Doctor English won his medical degree at the University ofPennsylvania in 1839, and studied law and was admitted to the bar in to a throat trouble, he was obliged to give up the law and resumedthe practice of medicine. His taste for literature began while he was still in his teens. It was inthe New York Mirror of September 25, 1843, that Ben Bolt immediately gained popularity and was copied into many American andEnglish papers, the latter failing to give credit.
