A flexible support at this point was necessary in orderthat each of the three boiler supports namely the two slid-ing bearings and the equalizing bolt, might bear its propor-tion of the load in any variation in alignment of the three. In order to obviate the necessity of flexible connections inthe sand pipes, leading to the driving wheels on the frontengine, sand is supplied to these wheels from a sand boxsupported on the front deck plate.
