Vintage photo of American boxer "Terrible" Terry McGovern (1880 - 1918) - winner of both the bantamweight and featherweight world titles. McGovern, born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is considered to be one of the greatest featherweights and hardest punchers of all time. He became World Bantamweight Champion in September 1899 by knocking out Pedlar Palmer in one round before relinquishing the title and moving up in weight to claim the world featherweight crown in January 1900 by defeating George Dixon. Following a string of successful defences he lost that title to Young Corbett II in November 1901 and was again defeated in a later rematch. McGovern spent much of his later life in mental institutions and died at the age of just 37. Photo circa 1898.
