Volunteers encourage passerbys in Union Square to send a text message as a donation to provide funds for aid to Haiti
Volunteers, organized by New York Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, encourage passerbys in Union Square on Monday, January 18, 2010 to send a text message as a donation to provide funds for aid to the earthquake ravaged nation of Haiti. Cell phone users can text "90999" which will then give $10 to the American Red Cross Haiti International Response Fund, charging your cell phone bill. A number of organizations have set up similar systems. (© Frances M. Roberts)
