A damaged statue, removed from a niche in the central tower of Durham Cathedral, England, UK, of St Cuthbert holding the head of St Oswald, the first Christian king of Northumbria (d. 642). 'Shining Sword' was 'martyred' in battle against Penda, the pagan king of Mercia who cut off his head & forearms. Oswald's head was buried on Lindisfarne & then taken to Durham in the coffin of St Cuthbert by monks fleeing the Viking raids.
