In the valleys, of which there are many, there are tracts of wonderfully richland, largely of alluvial deposits, that give paying returns. The Columbia and Kootenay Valleys, comprising the districts of Cranbrook,Nelson, Windermere, Slocan, Golden and Revelstoke, are very rich. Theeastern portion requires irrigation; they are well suited to fruit farming andall kinds of roots and vegetables. Timber lands are said to be the best, whencleared. In the western portion of these valleys there are considerable areas.
