Rice weevil atenna. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the end of a rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) antenna. It is covered in many sensory hairs for the detection of movement and smell. This weevil is a major pest of stored rice in warmer parts of the world. The female lays its eggs inside the grains and the developing larvae feed on the grains, hollowing them out.
