Royal Albert Bridge over the Tamar at Saltash gets new trackbed

A £3 million refurbishment of the Royal Albert Bridge over the Tamar to restore Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original hardwood timber trackbase, used from its construction in1859 until the 1920s. Engineers ound that modern sleepers and ballast trackbeds cause more metal fatigue to the structure than the traditional wood. The bridge links Devon and Cornwall.
