Natal Colliery In February, 1910, the last completed month before the date of writing, the totaloutput was 184,112 tons. For many years the output has exceeded the Natal coal consumption, and now theshipping trade is much more important than the local market. During 1909. tons, being 779 per cent, of the total output, left Natal. Theamount included 404,322 tons exported by sea ; tons exported overland and tonsbunkered by vessels calling at Durban. Though, unfortunately for shareholders, the recent expansion of trade has been gainedpartially by considerable reductions in prices, colliery companies paid £ in dividendsduring 1909. an amount equivalent to 822d. per ton of coal extracted. The principal coalfields are: The Klip River (approximately 1,650 square miles inarea), the Utrecht and Vryheid (approximately 550 square miles), and the Somkele orZululand (area doubtful).
