A famous library of200,000 volumes was collected at Pergamos by itskings, and was afterwards carried away by Cleopatraand added to the library at Alexandria. Parchmentwas invented and first used at Peigamos. It was alsoremarkable as being the birthplace of Galen thephysician, and Apollodorus the mythologist, and asthe chief scene of the worship of JEsculapius. The ruins of this ancient city are many and grand;and the situation indicates the people who selec-ted it. It embraces in its view the plain of Per-gamos, with its chain of mountains, and is lit by therising sun. There is in the middle of the city agroup of ruins of great extent, they appear to be tho.
