A small wire stay keptthe board in position. The front of the coopcan be made of thin slats, one of which ismovable, though we used thin galvanised wireas shown, because we happened to have a lotof it on hand, left over from some operationsin a curiously different line of work. The chief modifications made in this coopsince, relate to the shelter-board, which by manymakers is hinged at the top, and made wideenough to come down entirely over the front, and shut all completely in for the night. Theextra width is good, but whenever shutting inis necessary, on account of field vermin, it is anecessary evil, and ample ventilation holes mustbe provided. The most complete shelter we. Fig-53-—Gamekeepers Coop. have yet met with is provided in one of thedesigns supplied by Spratts Patent under thename of the Gamekeepers Coop, at a costof about 9s. and shown in Fig. 53. In thiscoop two side shutters entirely close in thefront when shut and fastened, the slope at theirtops giving a space for ventilation when shelter-board is made very wide, and is nothinged, but draivs out through a loose slide, falling loosely down so as to rest upon theopened shutters. There is thus great protectionboth against the heavens above and the below, and such a coop affordssufficient shelter for the most exposed is really more than is necessary for anythat is not posed.
