They are a thriftlesspeople, with no domestic animals excepting dogs ; not givento tilling the ground, and dependent, in the case of thecanoe Indians, on fish and fungus ; in that of the footIndians, on the skilful use of the bow and arrow. Thewhale is a great boon to them, for they feed on the blubberand manufacture the bones into spear heads and otherinstruments of hunting, and make fishing lines of plaitedsinews. Yet these natives could not procure a whale forthemselves, but are indebted to the swordfish for harassingand driving ashore these monsters of the deep
