Traffic passes the depressing, crime-ridden Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan in New York

Traffic passes the depressing, crime-ridden Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan in New York on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. The authority has proposed building an annex on land it already owns on West 39th Street for the aging building to alleviate the traffic and parking problems. Originally built in 1950, with additional floors added in 1963 and an expansion in 1980, the building still handles many more buses than it was originally designed for. (© Richard B. Levine)
