JONATHAN AUGUSTUS CHARLESHILDNER was born in the township of Freedom,Washtenaw County, Michigan, April 17, 186S, sonof John Gotthold and Johanna (Josenhans) early education was obtained in a Germanparochial school and in the pubhc schools. In 1890he was graduated Bachelor of Arts at the Universityof Michigan and the same year began his work as a. JONAlHAN AUGUSTUS CHARLES HILIINER teacher in the High School of Hancocli, 1891 to 1S97 he was Instructor in German atthe University of Michigan. Meanwhile, he pursuedgraduate studies in the University and received thedegree of Master of Arts on examination in 1897 he went abroad for further study and tookthe degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Leipzig in1899. He then returned to the University as In-structor in German, and in 1904 was advanced tothe rank of Assistant Professor. He is a member ofthe Modern Language Association of America. Inconjunction with T. J. C. Diekhoff he has publishedschool editions of Storms Immensee (1901, revised1904) and Freytags Die Journalisten (1901). Hewas married in July, 1891, to Barbara Goetz, of GEORGE AUGUSTUS HULETT was born in Will County, Illinois, July 15, 1868, son ofFrank and Lois (Holmes) Hulett.
