In this photograph, a pigeon known for its remarkable service during World War I is depicted. The pigeon lost a leg, believed to have been caused by shrapnel while delivering a message. The leg, still attached to a cord holding the message, can be seen dangling as the pigeon returns to its loft. President Wilson recognized the bravery of these pigeons, symbolizing their heroic contributions during the war. This particular image was taken on December 30, 1919, by photographer Corporal Towslee.
