All smiles: Yorkshire boy and girl hold Union Jacks or Union Flags to celebrate the Coronation of the British monarch, King George VI, on 12 May 1937

A smiling young boy and girl in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, proudly hold large Union Jacks or Union Flags, the flag of the United Kingdom, to celebrate the Coronation of the British monarch, King George VI, on 12 May 1937. This photograph was taken by George T Blenkhorn and Kathleen Blenkhorn ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society), who lived in Birkby, Huddersfield, at the time, and comes from a Blenkhorn family album. The boy is George and Kathleen's son, George H Blenkhorn, who was born in 1931 and so would be six years old in 1937. The name of the girl is not known. King George VI, father of the present British Queen, Elizabeth II, succeeded to the throne in 1936 on the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Edward married Wallis Simpson and the couple were subsequently titled Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
