Lace Collar, 1560-1600. Italy, Genoa, 16th century. Linen; lace, open cutwork (reticella) and bobbin; overall: x cm (22 3/8 x 11 5/8 in.). Large and small round motifs in a linear framework form this geometric design made in open cutwork, now known as reticella. Its fineness was cut from a linen cloth whose woven grid provided a firm ground for the embroiderer to build her lace. A similar design for open cutwork was published in a pattern book by Frederic de Vinciolo in Paris in 1587.
