Bonobo apes (Pan paniscus) grooming. This species of chimpanzee was discovered in 1929. It lives in a matriarchal and egalitarian society where sexual intercourse plays a major role in greeting, conflict resolution and post-conflict resolution. Same-sex sexual behaviour is also commonplace in bonobo society. In the wild it is found in only a small part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is endangered due to habitat loss, the bush meat trade and the trade in live primates. Photographed at the Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary, Democratic Republic of Congo.
