Elbow surgery. Close-up of surgeons performing an operation to treat cubital tunnel syndrome, or ulnar nerve entrapment. This is a condition where the ulnar nerve (centre) is trapped and compressed as it passes through a passage (the cubital tunnel) formed by the bones and muscles at the elbow. The symptoms include numbness and tingling in the hands and elbow pain. It can be caused by injury, arthritis or repetitive exercise. The operation shown is a submuscular transposition. It relieves pressure on the nerve by removing it from its original pathway on the outside of the elbow to lie on the inside, along the brachialis muscle.
