The Seveso disaster was an industrial accident that occurred on July 10, 1976, in a small chemical manufacturing plant owned by the Italian company ICMESA, 15 km north of Milan, Italy. It released one kilogram of Dioxin, one of the most toxic substances ever made. It resulted in the highest known exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in residential populations. Here Zone A, the most highly contaminated area if fenced off. 80,000 animals were slaughtered to avoid dioxins entering the food chain.
