The Compania Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV), based in Chile, is the largest shipping company in South America. Founded in 1872, it started trading along the west coast of South America, before extending operations to the United States, Europe, the Far East and Japan. The company transports general and bulk cargo, fresh and frozen products and vehicles, using its own and chartered ships, including those designed to carry a large number of containers. Hong Kong was the world's busiest container port 1987-89, 1992-97 and 1999-2004. It is a hub-port serving the South-East and East Asia Region, being the largest container port serving Southern China.
