Glacial retreat. Image 2 of 2. Mountainside in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, in 1988. This area of dry land was formerly occupied by Boulder Glacier. Glaciers are large, slow-moving expanses of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow. They are sensitive to climate change and in recent years most have retreated dramatically. See image E235/378 for a photograph of the glacier in 1932 from the same viewpoint.
