The central head is a representation of the god Apollo, while the other heads include the Gods Hermes (Greek) or and Dionysus or Bacchus, as well as Roman emperors. Apollo was associated with music, poetry, prophecy, and healing. Dionysus (Greek) or Bacchus (Roman) was the god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness and wild frenzy. Hermes (Greek) or Mercury (Roman) was the god of translators and interpreters and acted as the messenger for all other gods. The museum, housed in the Roman city's Great Baths, opened in 1962 and contains finds discovered by Arif Müfid Mansel, one of the pioneers of Turkish archeology, during his excavations in the Ancient City of Side. Side is a popular cultural and tourism destination.
