Angiography. Preparation of a patient for angiography. This is an imaging technique which enables blood vessels to be studied. A contrast medium opaque to X-rays is injected into a vein through the catheter (lower centre). A sequence or continuous recording of X- ray images is then taken, allowing the blood flow to be observed. Angiography is used to detect blood vessel disorders such as atherosclerosis (hard plaques blocking the inside of the vessels) and thrombosis (a blood clot blocking a vessel). These can lead to angina pectoris (chest pain), a stroke or a heart attack. Treatment depends on the cause.
