Crag Lough. This lake, in Northumberland National Park, England, is next to the Whin Sill (the cliff behind the lake) and Hadrian's Wall (built along the Whin Sill). This view, in summer, looks west towards the North Pennine hills. The Whin Sill is a protruding mass of quartz-type rock that stretches some 125 kilometres across the northern part of England. This forms a natural defensive feature, and in 122 AD the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of a wall to defend Roman Britain from the Picts to the north. The central portions of the 118-kilometre-long wall were built on the Whin Sill.
