The patina and condition of tliis fine bronze show it to liave been excavatedor to have accidentally come to the surface in very ancient times. The dis-covery or coming to light of these vessels in hills and valleys in early an-tiquity was always regarded as of good omen, and names of cities and ofreigns were changed in their honor. After the Sung dynasty, as Dr. Bushellpoints out, old bronzes being no longer held sacred, noble tombs wereexcavated for the enrichment of private collections and royal museums, andfor the study of the ancient 177— Tripod Incense Burner {Chou) Scnii-globular bowl, of licavy, sonorous bronze, with tliick, quadri-lateral upright loop handles and tall, unadorned, massive cabriolelegs. The bowl is encircled by a plain molding and wide bandsof an unusually bold dragon scroll in relief, outlined by deepcutting. Other dragon scrolls of varied form and differing fromeach other are carved in the handles. Entire jar covered with ararely beautiful, unctuous patina and incrustations of many tonesof malachite and olive-green, of gray, brown, black and brownish-red, with the deep lustrous greens predominating.
