Silhouette of Whitby Abbey ruins, North Yorkshire, looking NW at sunset: remains of a Norman Benedictine abbey rebuilt 1220 in Early English style
Silhouette of Whitby Abbey ruins looking NW at sunset. Remains of a Norman Benedictine abbey rebuilt 1220 in Early English style. Site famous for the Anglo-Saxon double monastery founded by St Hilda in 657 and the Synod of Whitby (664) which decided Christians in Britain should follow Roman liturgical practices rather than those of the Celtic Church. The A-S monastery was destroyed by Vikings around 867, the Medieval abbey dissolved in 1538. Whitby is also associated with 'Bram' Stoker's 1897 Gothic horror story Dracula.
