A specialeffort in this direction was made in relation to the cargo of theAmerican Ship Lucy A. Nickels. This ship arrived at the port ofNew York laden with 5000 bales of Japanese cotton rags taken onboard at Kobe, the port of Hiogo, Japan. The voyage had occupiedabout six months. There was no evidence ot the existence of cholerain the district around Hiogo at the time the ship loaded, but it hadbroken out afterward at Nagasaki, which is several hundred milesdistant from Hiogo and on another island.
