Open cell clouds. Terra satellite image of a cloud formation known as open cell, over the South Atlantic Ocean. This pattern appears on the back of a low pressure system or cyclone. The system draws in surrounding air and (in the Southern Hemisphere) spins clockwise. On one side cold air is pulled in from the south and on the other side warm air is drawn from equatorial regions. These cloud fomations result. Photographed in July 2004.
