The manufacturer shipsrods and fittings built for specific cars in stenciledboxes, so that when the parts arrive at Portland theirapplication to the right rolling stock units is assuredwithout delay. Work was begun on the job at the St. John Streetshops in Portland on Oct. 4, 1916, and at present it isabout half done. On account of maintenance workon other rolling stock, the reconstruction has had to betemporarily slowed down or suspended at times, thecompany considering it inadvisable to concentrate aspecialized force on work of such limited extent. In the case of the single-truck cars with 20-ft. bodies, which are representative, the bulkhead door was 21374in. wide in the clear before reconstruction, and on these. REMODELED PORTLAND CARS—INTERIOR OF RECONSTRUCTEDSEMI-CONVERTIBLE CAR smaller cars the bulkheads have not been wholly re-moved, but have been cut down to a height of 3 ft. 6in., the width of the passage into the car from the vesti-bule being increased to 27% in. This leaves in placea section of the bulkhead I8V2 in. wide on each side ofthe passage, which affords an arm rest 4V2 in. wide atthe top. One of the accompanying illustrations is an interiorview showing the set-up of one of these cars for one-man service, and although no immediate plans for theoperation of one-man cars have been announced atPortland, these remodeled 20-ft. cars can readily be soused if necessary. As shown in an accompanying illus-tration, the fare box is mounted just behind the right-hand forward bulkhead for one-man operation, the en-tering passengers passing between the motorman andthe box. The motorman controls the entrance door, which is shown open in this view, from an operati
