Fascioliasis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic flukes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, the cause of fascioliasis. Between them, the parasites are found worldwide. Humans, cattle and sheep become infected by ingesting contaminated aquatic plants such as watercress. Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, anaemia and jaundice. Chronic infections can lead to fibrosis of the bile ducts that eventually causes a blockage.
