During the absence of Professor Freerfrom 1901 to 1904 he was in charge of the Depart-ment of General Chemistry, with the rank of As-sistant Professor. On May 10, 1892, he wasmarried to Mary C. Barry, and they have two chil-dren, John Lawrence and Robert Barry. WALTER BOWERS PILLSBURY was born at Burlington, Iowa, July 21, 1872, son ofWilliam Henry Harrison and Eliza Crabtree (Bow-ers) Pillsbury. Both his father and mother were ofNew England ancestry. His early education wasobtained in the public schools of Oskaloosa, , and Ottumwa, Iowa, and of Fullerton,Nebraska. He attended Penn College, Iowa, from1888 to 1890 and then changed to the Universityof Nebraska, where he was graduated Bachelor ofArts in 1892. He took up graduate study at Cor-nell Piniversity in 1893, and received the degree ofDoctor of Philosophy there in 1S96. For one yearthereafter he was assistant in Psychology in CornellUniversity. In 1S97 he was appointed Instructorin Psychology at the University of Michigan, and in1900 became Assistant Professor of Philosophy andDirector of the Psychological Laboratory.
