Tariff matters in general had, lie said, been fully considered at a meeting of llic committee at New York, last Decem- l)cr, at which it was decided to let well enough alone and only seek rectifica- tion of a few aml)iguities existing in the present tariff. The result of the meeting and the letter dispatched to the officials at Washington were pub- lished fully in all the trade ])apers. Since that meeting, however, the gla- diolus growers were clamoring for the committee's help in their effort to have the duty on gladioli $10 per thousand, instead of 50 cents, as at present. There was to be a hearing next day, January , before the committee on ways anil means, at which the gladiolus duty was to be discussed and he asked for a vol- unteer committee from the board to ac- company him to the hearing. This precipitated a long-drawn-out discussion as to whether or not a high tariff should be asked on Dutch bulbs as well as gladioli. Mr. Asmus led the discussion, insisting that a high tariff would stabilize the bulb business for American growers and prevent the dumping of surpluses from Holland growers into the United States at prices vastly lower t
