Prior to Shimano's introduction of the "freehub" and "cassette", dérailleur geared bikes used a screw on set of sprockets (or block) containing a freewheel. In the Shimano system the freewheel is built into the freehub and the set of sprockets, or cassette, is a spline fit over the hub.
