The stone circles at Stanton Drew in Somerset is the third largest complex of standing stones in England. They are surprisingly little known due, mostly to their isolation. The stones are part of a larger complex within the English Heritage survey revealed the Stoines to be part of an important elaborate and important Great Circle is some 135 metres in diameter. They were probably first noted by John Aubrey, a famous antiquarian, in 1664. Local folklore has it that the stones are the members of a wedding party and its musician (the devil, naturally,) punished for holding their revels on the Sabbath by being turned to stone. These images were taken on mid-summer's day, an important day both now and in pre-historic times.
