The method of electrizing the eye, ear, nose, larynx, oesophagus, heart, lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines, rectum, bladder, maleand female organs of generation, will be described in the chapters devotedto diseases of these organs. The method of electrizing individual nerves and muscles has been de-scribed and illustrated in the chapter on electro-therapeutic anatomy. Effect of Current Modified by the Length of Application.—The sensa-tions and the effects of electric applications are considerably modified bythe length of time that the electrodes are kept in position. When thefaradic current is first applied to the skin, it causes a stinging, pricking * Op. cit., p. 56. If the current 3o8 ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS. is at first very strong, it cannot be borne long enough to produce this be-numbing effect. When the galvanic current is first applied to the skin it causes no sen-sation or scarcely any, unless it be very strong or is directed over or neara motor nerve; if the electrodes are kept in position for a iew seconds, aslight burning sensation is felt at both poles, but strongest at the nega-tive. This burning sensation increases quite rapidly until the sensationit causes is like that of a strong mustard plaster, or hot iron, and becomesunendurable. The benumbing effect of the faradic current is not experi-enced. This increase of the pain under the galvanic current is due totwo causes^—the moistening of the skin thro
