Results of Experiments with Nitro-hydrochloric Acid.—The positive effectof the acid in Experiment 44a is in remarkable contrast to the negative resultobserved in Experiment 44. In consequence of the positive result in the former case, and seeing that it com-pletely agrees with observa-tions on man, we did not thinkit necessary to perform anotherexperiment. In view of thepositive effect in 44a, we donot attach any importance tothe negative result of Experi-ment 44; for the animal wasa small one, and in such caseswe have found that undoubtedcholagogues sometimes failto act. It is proved, then, that dilute nitro-hvdrochloricacid is a hepatic stimulant ofconsiderable power. 05. Fig. 45.—Secretion of bile before and after sodium chloride. 10 injected into duodenum at w. Action of Sodium Chloride. Sodium chloride is a cath-artic when given in doses of 120to 240 grains. It is not statedto be a cholagogue, but as itis contained in considerablequantity in the mineral watersof Carlsbad, Ems, Friedrich-shall, that have a reputationin abnormal conditions of theliver, we thought it desirableto test its action on this organ.
