This reflection, which is caused by theyellowish colour of the exudation, is most strongly pronouncedbehind the umbo, in the region of the promontory, and it is sodecidedly different from the appearance of the normal membranethat the diagnosis of accumulation of serous or mucous exudate inthe tympanic cavity may be made from it alone. Often no line of demarcation appears until air has been forcedinto the cavum tympani. In all these instances the lustre of themembrane is greatly increased, and the handle of the mal
