It was already twilight before we descended, and took a turn or two in the streetswhich were filled with a motley crowd, as is nearly always the case in Southern cities in theevening, but the population had little to recommend it to the sympathies of a the lower classes we saw plenty of examples of the squalor of outward appearanceand the mobility of gesture, which are so characteristic of the South ; but without that.
